Barnet Metropolitan Police are beeping Christmas shoppers' mobile phones with news flashes warning about crime.
The Bluetooth broadcasts beam from police vans after a spate of muggings or cashpoint robberies in an area. Witness appeals or terror warnings can also be sent. A pilot in Barnet, North London, may now go nationwide.
Chief Supt Stephen Kavanagh said: "It's time for us to use every bit of technology available because criminals are doing so."
